Getting on and off Texada
Island has been at times a challenge.
Water transportation to
the mainland was provided by vessels such as of the Steamboat “Wood
Nymph”, The MV “Louvain, The Texada “Lady Slipper”, “Moccasin” and
“Blue Bell”. Union Steamships, CPR Steamships and the Gulf Lines
provided coastal service to the Mainland and Vancouver Island.
Regular ferry service was implemented in 1955 with the MV “Atriveda”
which was replaced with the Department of Highways vessel MV “Texada
Queen” in 1969, currently providing service is BC Ferries MV “North
Island Princess”.
Volunteer
air enthusiasts located and roughed out an airstrip near Gillies Bay
in the late 1950’s over the years still with volunteer labor and
additional Government assistance Texada enjoys an excellent paved
airstrip with regular scheduled flights.
